About Gent
The Belgian town of Gent is the capital of the East Flanders Province and has a population of about 230,000. It lies at the confluence of the Scheldt and the Lys. It is connected to the sea by a canal, and has a large harbour.
According to archeologists, the area was first inhabited during the Stone Age. Some say that the name of the city may derive from a Celtic word meaning "confluence". The Franks invaded the Roman territory in the 5th c. and the Dutch language came to replace the Celtic and the Latin. Two abbeys were founded about 650, and along with the commercial center, they served as the nucleus from which the city grew. The Vikings plundered it twice in the 9th century. Ghent eventually recovered from the attacks and flourished from the 11th century onwards as Europe's second biggest city after Paris. Because of its tall belfry and the towers of the Cathedral and the St. Nicholas Church ("the three towers of Gent"), it has been referred to as "Manhattan of the Middle Ages".
